CATALONIA – The Second Death of Ignacio Sanchez Mejias

I must recognize that during my life I have been present at seven bullfights and all of them during my 37 years in which I lived in Barcelona.  It was at the emblematic bullring, the Monumental where I witnessed this festival for the first time.  I would be lying if I said that I enjoyed watching the National Celebration or Sport, a spectacle that conjugates blood and cruelty, where the aroused and partial public stands behind the bullfigther.  But like the good Spanish that I am, I feel proud that my motherland has conserved these traditions which date back hundreds of years.  To cite an example, the first bullfight took place in Catalonia, dating back to the year 1387, during the reign of Juan 1, and it was in Barcelona, according to the official records kept at the General Archives of the Crown of Aragón, which was in the city of Barcelona.  The first bullring of Barcelona was called the Torin, in the district of the recently inaugurated Barceloneta in the year 1834.  The world of the bullfighting always has had its detractors in Spain, although it have been the supporters of this National Festival that have helped raised it to the cultural levels that is so well known today.  One of the great poets who have paid homage to the world of bullfighting is none other than Garcia Lorca who said,  <Bullfighting represents probably the political and vital wealth of Spain, but it has not been fully taken advantage of by the writers and artists, who due to a false pedagogical education that have been given to them and to us, those of my generation have been the first to reject it.  I believe that the bullfights are the most cultured celebration but that there is in the world.>  Rafael Alberti was another great admirer of the world of bullfighting, so was Gerald Diego.  A very special case was Don Jacinto Benavente, our Nobel Prize Laureate for Literature.  A day he was asked if he liked the bullfighting to which he responded that <if I had to be sincere, I would very much prefer the bullfigthers.>  Don Jacinto was very brave for his time as he never hid his homosexuality.  Picasso lamented during his exile in France that it was the bullfights that he missed the most, although he would try to find a cure for his nostalgia by attending the bullfights held in Nimes, Arles and other bullrings in the South of France.  Even in Mexico, the celebration of the bullfights have been something traditional and in accordance with the Spanish heritage.  The first bullfight was celebrated on 24 June of 1526.
The reason for this article is due to the state of my motherland, which due to the diabolical and cowardly politicians using the compassion as bait, have prohibited bullfights, all in the name of kindness to animals.  Who do you want to fool, hypocrites, your hatred will not let you live on politically.  I hope to observe from my watchtower your downfall on the 20th of November.   And without a doubt Sanchez Mejías will live on as a legend.  You meanwhile, will be swept aside like dust by the winds of time.
